Mid-Century Modern Retirement Home in Watford

A complete renovation of a retirement home.

Creating a timeless yet modern home for retirees.

We were thrilled to take on the challenge of renovating a luxury care home in Watford. The goal was to give clean and practical solutions to many spaces around the building while bringing its style and design forward.

At Timberfusion, we specialize in both residential and commercial projects. If you're interested in learning more about how we can help you build your dream project, contact us today

  • The mid-century modern retirement home project was an exciting one for us. We loved the opportunity to be able to create bespoke furniture and fittings for each space, with a focus on functionality and style.

Each item was designed with the needs of the space in mind, whether that meant reception desks and nursing stations or unique treatment rooms for its guests. The grazing bar and café for both the staff and guests, and communal spaces such as the cinema and library were also bespoke, enabling guests to feel relaxed and at home.

We ensured all our work was not only beautiful but also practical for the staff to be able to provide the best care possible.

  • The reception desk is the first thing visitors see when they arrive at the building. It's the first impression the care home makes, and it needs to be good.

Our elegant and soft design draws people in with its warm colours and inviting feel. Corian sandalwood worktops with leather inlay give it a luxurious touch, while curved-face plywood with veneered Egger in Cream Tessina Ceramic gives it an elegant look.

A lockable cupboard with shelving provides ample storage space for the staff's personal items and office supplies. Lastly, the light-up strip Egger decor in White Halifax oak gives a natural, authentic look that ties the whole room together.

  • The grazing bar is a bespoke furniture piece that can be used by residents of a retirement home to enjoy meals with their friends and family. The design was inspired by the desire to create an atmosphere welcoming to all, regardless of ability.

The Grazing Bar features an integrated sink so guests can wash their hands before using it. The Avonight worktops in Seaside contrast the bar's body, which is made with Walnut MDF and Xylocleaf facing in Ares for contrast.

  • The café is where both the care home's staff and guests can come together to enjoy a cup of tea or perhaps a slice of cake. The design of the café mirrors that of the reception desk, using curved-face plywood with veneered Egger in Cream Tessina Ceramic.

It features Corian sandalwood worktops and Dibond fins & shelves in copper for a classy look. We've also created a lockable cupboard with shelving and mirrored back panels to brighten the space. We reinforced the structure with 18mm Egger sub-frames to ensure it's fit for purpose. To complete the elegant cafe, we added light-up Egger strips in White Halifax Oak.

  • To create an attractive and functional environment, we designed the hairdressing and therapy room to be welcoming and relaxing. We used a combination of light and medium tones to give the space a warm and inviting feeling.

The Corian worktops in White Onyx are durable and versatile, brightening up the space, predominantly featuring medium wooden textures. The shelves are made of Egger in Grey Nebraska Oak for a muted rustic appearance.

  • The library is perfect for guests who enjoy some quiet time reading or a place to get some mentally stimulating activities done. The space is cosy and comfortable, with cupboards and shelving framed in MDF spray-finished with Dulux-30YY46/036.

The grey double touch-latch shaker doors add a classic appeal to this library and the painted finish gives it that contemporary touch. The mirrored back panels and glass shelving with LED strip lights provide storage for books while making the room look bigger and brighter.

  • Nursing stations are a key component of any retirement home. They are the place where residents and families can meet with doctors, nurses, and other caregivers to discuss medical issues and care plans. Hence, they must be efficient yet minimal enough to avoid getting cluttered.

For this project, we designed and built four nursing stations. We chose to use Walnut MDF and Xylocleaf facing for the body. Meanwhile, we used Avonight worktops in Seaside, which are easy to clean and durable enough for constant use.

  • The cinema is another space for relaxation and entertainment for the care home's guests. It is another space for them to enjoy some time away from their daily routine.

We mostly used dark-coloured materials to create a cosy, intimate feel. The HI-MACS worktops in Black Granite provide a sophisticated look, while the bespoke furniture built with Walnut MDF adds warmth to the room. The copper Dibond back panels add a touch of luxury and the glass shelving with LED lighting ensures that the cinema can be easily used when dark.
